Overcoming Adversity

I would like to quote from a book called "The Wisdom of Compassion" by the Dalai Lama and Victor Chan. Begin on page xiii of the preface. Begin quote:
"In Overcoming adversity," the Dalai Lama speaks to sick children, ex-prisoners, and victims in the Northern Ireland conflict. He listens to their heartbreaking stories and explains that widening our perspective can help us deal with challenges.

The practice of compassion goes beyond thinking caring thoughts. The Dalai Lama encourages us to learn to think holistically, to incorporate the values of empathy, and altruism, in addition to achieving academic excellence, in the classrooms. In "Educating the Heart", he converses with high school students and shares his thoughts on how we can nurture the seed of compassion throughout our lives. He suggests that the causes of most of our problems aare not external but are in our own minds. Anger, attachment, and ignorance are the real sources of our unhappiness." end quote from page xxxi.
